GPL Quake III Source Coming Soon

Posted by inpheaux on August 12th, 2005 at 9:37 pm

QuakeCon 2005 is in full swing now, and earlier today was John Carmack's keynote speech. In between talking about general stuff like the state of the gaming industry and his thoughts regarding next-gen consoles, he mentioned that the Quake III source code release would be released within the next week. As with previous id source releases, the Quake III source will be released under the terms of the GPL.

Note that you won't be able to download the source and magically have a free copy of Quake III. What you will be able to do is build your own very own game off the Quake III engine without having to cough up the usually-hefty engine licensing fees . . so long as you don't mind that your game will be GPL by extension.
