Quake 3 Source Code is out

Posted by inpheaux on August 19th, 2005 at 3:57 pm

Attention all aspiring indie game developers: it's out. As we reported earlier, id Software has released the source code responsible for the Quake 3 engine. It's now available for you to hack apart and build into your very own game, provided said game ends up being GPL'ed as well. It hasn't hit id's "Technology Downloads" page yet, but it's up on their ftp, as well as some mirrors.

Some notes on what you get in this friendly little 5.5mb zip:

"code/ - Quake III Arena source code ( renderer, game code, OS layer etc. )
code/bspc - bot routes compiler source code
lcc/ - the retargetable C compiler ( produces assembly to be turned into qvm bytecode by q3asm )
q3asm/ - assembly to qvm bytecode compiler
q3map/ - map compiler ( .map -> .bsp ) - this is the version that comes with Q3Radiant 200f
q3radiant/ - Q3Radiant map editor build 200f ( common/ and libs/ are support dirs for radiant )"

So go on, make something. Hopefully we'll be seeing some neat stuff come out of this very capable codebase in the near future.
