News Corp buys IGN/Gamespy for $650 Million
Posted by inpheaux on September 8th, 2005 at 10:54 amOk, so I just got through writing up that huge post about how nothing interesting was happening. Well, this is interesting. News Corp (parent company of 20th Century Fox and a whole ton of Other Stuff) has just coughed up a smooth $650 Mil for IGN/Gamespy. In the deal, News Corp also gets the whole family of sites IGN/Gamespy has sucked up over time - Team Xbox, Fileplanet, all the *Planet sites, Rotten Tomatoes, GameStats, etc. It's a lot of sites.
Was it worth it? Personally, I feel IGN/Gamespy could've gotten more. I mean, back in July News Corp picked up the festering cesspit of the interweb - MySpace - for $580 Mil, and that was just for one site. This is for a whole network of festering cesspits, and it just ran them an extra $70 Mil?
Anyways, I'll now be canning my IGN Insider account and replacing it with a Gamespot Complete membership, since I try to do my best to avoid giving News Corp money. It just encourages them. Unfortunately, sometimes it is unavoidable.
