Super Mario Bros turns 20

Posted by inpheaux on September 13th, 2005 at 9:10 am

Nintendo of Japan has had their "Happy Mario 20th" celebration going on for pretty much the entire past month, but today's the day. 20 years ago today, Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan for the Famicom. A short month later on October 1st it was released stateside, where it scored a Guinness World Record for total copies sold, which still stands today unbroken at around 40 million.

Nintendo has conveniently set up the date to coincide with the Japanese release of the Game Boy Micro, of which there is an exclusive Famicom Edition, which rather perfectly replicates the Famicom controller. Personally, I'm hoping we get an NES edition. . which, of course, I wouldn't be buying because I already have a GBA, but it'd still be Intensely Neat.

So tonight, I suggest you dust off your NES's (and blow into your Mario/Duck-Hunt cartridges) - or fire up your emulator of choice - and put in some quality time with the best game ever.
