Good news for King’s Quest Fans

Posted by King_Andy on December 10th, 2005 at 1:59 pm

As a follow up to our story about Vivendi Universal Games (current owners of Sierra Entertainment) shutting down fan-made sequels to their beloved franchises, we have some good news. "Kings Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining" from Phoenix Online Studios is back on track and has been given a 'fan license' to use the King's Quest characters and story.

They've had to make a few concessions to Vivendi, The new title of the game will be "The Silver Lining". Also their website and possibly the game will have to be modified in ways that they don't elaborate on, but the implication is that these changes will be minor. (My guess is that they mostly just have to scrub out references to the "King's Quest" name.)

Phoenix credits the website SaveKQIX.org for making this happen. SaveKQIX.org assisted with negotiations between Phoenix and Vivendi but also galvanized thousands of fans into action with email-writing campaigns and whatnot to save the project.

Phoenix says that while the months that the project was on hold has pushed back their timetable, the first three chapters of "The Silver Lining" will be made available sometime in 2006.
