Halo 2 for Windows Vista - Does anyone care?

Posted by inpheaux on February 9th, 2006 at 2:09 pm

Moments ago Microsoft confirmed rumors that were circulating earlier in the day to the effect that Halo 2 would be coming to PC, specifically being locked into only running on Windows Vista. The fact that they're doing this is no incredible suprise, but does anyone really care? If the game is only going to be able to run on Vista, presumably due to their use of XNA and DirectX 10, then it can't really be released until Vista is out.

The latest projections put a Vista release date at a somewhat premature October, so a plausable releasedate for Halo 2 PC would be November-ish. That pegs it at 2 years after the initial release for the Xbox. So lets think here: it's November. The PS3 has been out for a few months. The Xbox 360 is rounding out the end of its first year. The Revolution is out or just around the corner. And back on the PC, Microsoft wants us to shell out a couple hundred bucks for a new OS so we can play a 2 year old port of a previous-generation game. Uh, sure Microsoft. We'll get right on that.

On the bright side of things, it should be noted that it looks like Bungie is handling the porting process directly, rather than dumping it on a third party developer like Gearbox. This is a good thing, since Gearbox didn't really do a wonderful job of porting Halo 1 to PC. So for all six of you gamers who will be rushing right out to get Vista at release, you can rest assured that there's a rather decent chance of Halo 2 at least working well when you get it. And while you do that, I'll be over here enjoying the new generation of console games and amazing PC games that won't be requiring an OS upgrade.
