April 1st hits early

Posted by inpheaux on March 31st, 2006 at 7:22 pm

Ah, April fool's day, the day when another year's worth of hoaxes and pranks to trick the intensely gullible rise up again. There's always been the problem of timeliness when it came to pranks from gaming magazines, as the "April" issue for many gaming magazines tends to drop in February or March, but this year [...]

Half-Life 2: “Episode 1″ slips a month

Posted by inpheaux on March 26th, 2006 at 4:17 am

The Half-Life 2 single-player expansion pack "Episode 1", formerly titled "Aftermath", has apparently slipped a month. I guess this is the real problem with switching to a primarily-online and developer-controlled distribution structure. You can quite easily change your release date to whatever you want, you don't have to worry about shuffling gold cds to manufacturing [...]

StarCraft: Ghost postponed indefinitely

Posted by inpheaux on March 25th, 2006 at 4:58 pm

After nearly five years of development and a massive transition between two developers [three if you count the transition made when Blizzard acquired Swingin Ape Studios], Blizzard has finally shelved their StarCraft third-person sneaker/shooter.
In a press release yesterday, Blizzard President Mike Morhaime announced that the main reasoning behind the shelving boils down to the current [...]

Directional Pad Game Review Megapost

Posted by inpheaux on March 24th, 2006 at 1:59 am

You want reviews? Seriously? Great, because reviews are what I have to give. Six of them, in fact. Some of them were slightly delayed, but hey, we have games to play. With such a great lineup of stuff to play, it's fully understandable that we might get sidetracked.
So here's what we've got:

Guitar Hero - Sid [...]

Nintendo at GDC 2006 – Brain Age and Zelda:DS

Posted by inpheaux on March 23rd, 2006 at 6:08 pm

Oh, Nintendo. Why must you tease us? All week, people have been buzzing around, whispering rumors of super ultra huge news coming from Nintendo at their GDC keynote. Revolution release date? DS Lite stateside release date? Revolution official name [since "Revolution" has always been stated as nothing but a codename]? Some news about Twilight Princess?
No. [...]

Sony at GDC 2006 – Kratos, Ducks, downloadable content and more

Posted by inpheaux on March 23rd, 2006 at 5:36 pm

Sony's GDC Keynote was yesterday, and . . they really didn't say much. Most of the keynote consisted of regurgitating and/or confirming things we already knew from last week's press conference or from even earlier press conferences. Anyway, here's the rundown:

God of War 2 exists, and is coming for the PS2 "Soon". Here's a shaky-cam [...]

Shadow of the Colossus cleans up at the GDC Awards

Posted by inpheaux on March 23rd, 2006 at 3:06 pm

The 2006 Game Developers conference has been going on all week and one of today's events was the presentation of the Game Developers Choice Awards, quite possibly the only videogame-related awards worth listening to.
The winners? Four games ended up taking everything: Shadow of the Colossus, Psychonauts, Guitar Hero and Nintendogs. I don't think I could [...]

PS3 Sorta-delayed, PSP Price slashed

Posted by inpheaux on March 15th, 2006 at 10:50 am

Early thismorning, as much of the rest of the world slept, Sony held a business conference in Japan to discuss what exactly is going on with the PS3. So, what is going on? Well, after months and months of delay speculation, it's finally been confirmed: the PS3 is officially delayed until November 2006. Luckily, the [...]

Updated: KatamariDamacy.jp closes up shop

Posted by inpheaux on March 14th, 2006 at 11:58 am

UPDATE - 17MAR2006 @ 03:09 - Looks like smart money was on paranoia. After two years of dutiful service, katamaridamacy.jp has shut down. An initial translation of the page that remains seems to indicate that the assorted members of the dev team responsible for Katamari Damacy have gone their separate ways, so they've decided to [...]

Starforce: Piracy Advocates?

Posted by inpheaux on March 12th, 2006 at 6:56 am

This is a very simple and incredibly stupid little story.
Back on the 2nd, Stardock posted some news on their site congratulating themselves over the fact that their latest game - Galactic Civilizations II - was doing quite decently in retail sales, despite being an under-hyped independent release with no super-intrusive copy protection.
A few days later, [...]
