Home-Made Animated LED Pac-Man Bike Rims

Posted by inpheaux on March 9th, 2006 at 12:07 am

This is the geekiest thing i have seen in months and I love it. This post over on Instructables [a user-editable pictorial instruction guide for all manner of intersting things] details how to make your very own animated bike-wheel display.

It works due to persistance of vision: if the LEDs attached to the wheel move fast enough, you'll see them as a solid disc of light. Hook up some microcontrollers and blink certain LEDs at the right times and you can draw seemingly non-rotating images, and animate them if you want to go for Extra Points. Then it's just a matter of programming said microcontrollers to draw Pac-Man chasing down a ghost.

Articles like this make me sad that I lack electrical engineering skills.
