The “Macs can’t play games” argument is officially dead

The end-times are near.

Over the past month or so, the several independent efforts to bring Windows to the new Intel-based iMacs have reached fruition (pun definitely intended), but now there's an official option. Earlier today, Apple announced the immediate release of the public beta for Boot Camp, a bootloader for Intel-based Macs. With this, an Intel Mac and a Windows XP disc you can drag your Mac kicking and screaming into the world of being able to play PC Games. It's currently just a public beta right now, but is reportedly quite stable, and will be included by default in the upcoming release of OSX 10.5.

One of the main differences between this and the several unofficial options is full driver support. When you go through the Boot Camp installer, it'll give you a chance to burn all the drivers you'll need in Windows. Once it's all configured, switching back and forth between "being able to play games like the rest of the world" and "having pretty chrome and lickable widgets" is just a matter of rebooting.

So if you've been stuck in crazy fruit land for the past couple decades, go play some games. You're free now. If you're not sure where to start, I suggest hitting some classics like System Shock 2 or Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight.
