PS2 pricedrop official – New MSRP: $129.99
Posted by inpheaux on April 20th, 2006 at 11:57 amSony has been rocking the pricedrops pretty hard lately. Just about a month ago, they cut the price of the PSP from $249.99 to $199.99. Now they've cut the price of the PS2 from $149.99 to the bargain-basement price of $129.99. CNN Money reported that analysts had predicted this move last week, but now it's official.
If for some reason you still don't have a PS2, now you've got another $20 shaved off the top. Of currently available consoles, the PS2 has the largest (and arguably best) game library. It's also worth noting that the PS2 is not dead yet, in fact, it's far from it. Unlike the Gamecube or Xbox, there's still a ton of great PS2 exclusive games on the horizon. Guitar Hero 2, FF12, Okami, Disgaea 2, God of War 2, etc. And with the PS3 still quite a ways off, and expected to be fully backwards compatible (like the PS2's backwards compatibility, not like the Xbox 360's backwards compaibility), developers aren't afraid of continuing to churn out PS2 games.
Now, the CNN article also mentioned that this pricedrop may force Microsoft to drop the original Xbox's price down to $99. There've been no indications from Microsoft along these lines, as they're still heavily focused on pushing the 360 and pretending the Xbox doesn't exist, but we'll keep our eyes peeled.
