The Revolution gets a name: Nintendo Wii

Posted by inpheaux on April 27th, 2006 at 12:53 pm

I can't help but feel like I'm being trolled.

After years of going under the development codename "Revolution", Nintendo has finally given its next-gen offering a proper name. Wii. Yes, "Wii". No, I am not joking. You can read it on Nintendo's site just as well as I can. There isn't a whole lot there, apart from a short animation, the official logo and an introductory touchy-feely marketspeak blurb about what the name means to Nintendo.

Some real information was leaked out today, though. Gamasutra has a tiny bit of news about the disc tray, namely that there isn't one. The Revol"Wii" will have a slot-loading optical drive, which will accept both the Gamecube's mini-dvds as well as the new 12cm discs. Everything else is sorta just all stuff we knew already.

Hopefully getting the name change out of the way two weeks early should mean the floodgates will be open when E3 rolls around, which as Wii've mentioned before Wii'll be attending. So expect a ton of new information then, which Wii'll be bringing to you as it breaks.
