E3 in serious jeopardy, possibly cancelled indefinitely

Somewhat shocking news from inside the Electronic Software Association today: E3 is potentially over.
Depending on who you ask, E3 is either completely dead or due for massive restructuring. Speculation is presently running rampant, and the ESA staying relatively quiet on the subject, though an official announcement is expected tomorrow.
Next-Gen seems convinced that the show is outright done for, and E3 2007 will be formally canceled tomorrow. Gamespot, on the other hand, is reporting that the show will just be significantly scaled back, moved, and possibly get a format change. Either way, both sources are citing the fact that developers and publishers have realized that blowing bajillions of dollars in May to compete to have the biggest multimedia spectacle with bonus three-day stage show complete with dancing bears is - in fact - not the best use of their money, and instead that money should possibly go towards . . uh . . you know . . making games that don't suck.
More details next week when there's an actual announcement. In the meantime, I suggest going back and reviewing our amazing coverage of what may turn out to have been the last E3 ever.
