F.E.A.R. MP goes free in a couple hours

Posted by inpheaux on August 17th, 2006 at 9:20 am

For reasons that are somewhat lost on me, it seems SierraVivendi Universal Games and Monolith have decided to rip the multiplayer mode out of last year's semi-hit FPS F.E.A.R. and make it a standalone game. Oh, and they're releasing it for free. In about two hours.

They're calling the "new" game "F.E.A.R. Combat", and it's exactly what it says it is. Fully-patched FEAR MP, in a single downloadable chunk. It's slated to contain 10 multiplayer modes, 12 weapons, and 19 maps, including 3 that are new, which will be simultaneously released as part of the retail 1.07 patch. If the announcement is to be believed, FEAR Combat isn't held back in any way. You'll have no time-limit, no content restrictions, and even be able to play user-made maps and the like.

To get FEAR Combat you just have to head over to JoinFEAR.com and sign up. When it's ready, you'll enter the keycode you receive and be able to download the game. I've seen some people complaining that the countdown clock is somewhat screwy since it's based off your local clock, but as best I can tell it's set to be ready around 11:00 AM ET.

So if you've been putting off checking out FEAR, maybe now's the time to take a look. I mean, it's free, right? How can you go wrong with free?
