MTV reveals most of the Guitar Hero 2 set list

Posted by inpheaux on October 3rd, 2006 at 6:54 pm

I know it may seem like every other day there's another post here about some new Guitar Hero 2 news, but damnit, we're excited about this. MTV has an online gaming video . . show . . thing . . on their "Overdrive" site, and in their latest episode the lead segment is about Guitar Hero 2.

It's largely stuff we know, why it's great, they have new songs, etc, but the real key is that they have clear video of the set list. From this, we have gleaned even more tracks, and a rough order they'll be appearing in the game. In case you don't want to sit through a Sprite ad, I've composited screenshots of everything you need right here.

First off, new songs:

Mother (assumed to be Danzig, not Pink Floyd)
Monkey Wrench - Foo Fighters
Woman - Wolfmother (there were rumors about this earlier)
Search & Destroy (not Seek and Destroy, sadly. Assumed to be Iggy Pop, but it could be Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Cherry Pie - Warrant (says "Not in Yet", kinda late, isn't it?)
Girlfriend (Could be a number of artists, assumed to be Matthew Sweet)
Rock This Town - Stray Cats
Killing In The Name Of - Rage Against the Machine (Assuming they'll be cutting the end off for ESRB reasons)
Freya - The Sword
Bad Reputation - Joan Jett
Stop (assumed to be Jane's Addiction)
Raw Dog - The Last Vegas (they won the second "Be a Guitar Hero" contest)

A lot of assumptions in there, but that's just because the set list screen doesn't show bands. We're still missing the last two sets, and they'll contain the following songs we already know:

Madhouse - Anthrax
Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Beast and the Harlot - Avenged Sevenfold
Misirlou - Dick Dale
Laid to Rest - Lamb of God
Psychobilly Freakout - Reverent Horton Heat
YYZ - Rush
Hangar 18 - Megadeth

But that's only 8 songs. Sets have 5. So we're still missing two out of the 40 tracks that make up the whole game. What are they? IT IS A MYSTERY.

Another thing to note is that it's pretty obvious that the set lists aren't set in stone as of the recording of this video, seeing as tracks tend to jump around. Message in a Bottle, for instance, jumps between sets 1 and 2. Sweet Child o' Mine hops between sets 4 and . . somewhere that didn't get shown. Rock This Town only shows up for a second in set 5, and so on. But still, you get the basic idea. It's got to be pretty close to final by now, as we're closing in on a month before release.

And if that month is just too far away, the November issue of the Official Playstation Magazine should be out to subscribers by now, but will be hitting news stands next week. Possibly earlier, but the official "remove from shelves" date for the October issue is the 9th. This is worth talking about because contained therein is a demo disc with GH2 on it.

You get four songs in all their glory: Strutter, Shout at the Devil, You Really Got Me and YYZ. All difficulties are playable, and the only downside is you have to go through a somewhat lengthy process of picking your character and guitar before playing any song, and to play a new one you have to start over and do it all again. Also, no MP, no coop, no practice mode. Just SP free-play. Again, OPM, November issue (even though October only just started), on shelves any time now, but definitely by next Monday.

Guitar Hero 2 is still slated for release on 7 NOV 2006. So after you go vote, you can rush right home and rock out.
