Quake Wars public beta details announced

Posted by inpheaux on June 16th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Last night, while we were experiencing our lovely downtime, quite a few people got all excited when it appeared that Fileplanet had posted a public beta for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. There was no announcement, no details about it on the front page, and nothing about it being limited to subscribers or anything. Oh, and the download link didn't work, either.

A few minutes ago, Splash Damage's Community Relations dude posted an official announcement saying that yes, a public beta is coming very soon, yes it will be Fileplanet exclusive, and no it will not require a subscription. The way they'll be handling the subscription deal is this: they're opening 60,000 slots, anyone with a Fileplanet account can get in, but subscribers get priority.

Still no date, but damn, they've got the file up there already, so it's got to be soon. I'd expect it by Monday at latest. The beta is slated to have one map, called "sewer", from the pacific campaign. It takes place in a Strogg base . . uh . . in a sewer. Yes, this gives ET:QW one of the shortest time-to-the-first-sewer-level in recent history, possibly ever. You get to the sewer level a month and a half before the game is released.

Ignoring the whole "Sewer levels are the second-most played-out aspect of games, right after crates and crate-like containers", I'm still pretty seriously looking forward to Quake Wars. I loved what I played at E3, and can't wait to get my hands on the full game.
